Winsor and Newton Cotman Water Colours are a range of water colours that are made to our high quality standards but costs are kept to an economical level by replacing some of the more costly pigments with less expensive alternatives.
Cotman Water Colours possess good transparency, excellent tinting strength and good working properties.
The box itself is made from lightweight plastic and has a detachable lid and palette for easy cleaning and handling.

Pigment

The sources of colorants are as follows: some are natural products, especially earth-based pigments, such as dark brown and ochre; some come from metal compounds, sometimes called &traditional& or &pure&, for example Ultramarine.

After petroleum is refined, a large amount of organic pigments can be produced, which are usually called &modern& pigments. Many of the pigments used in the Cotman are organic pigments.

Transparency

Because the watercolor coating is very thin, all colors show a certain degree of transparency when painting on paper.
The color materials used in the Cotman series are extremely transparent.

Particles

Generally speaking, traditional colors are granular, such as earthy pigments and ultramarine.
Modern organic pigments have no particle problem, such as Cotman Hue pigments.
If you want to avoid graining in your painting, use distilled water to reduce graining, especially in areas with very hard water.

Color mixing

Both Cotman watercolor and artist watercolor can be mixed freely. If Cotman needs long-term light fastness, it should use AA or A grades of light fastness recommended to artists. The three main pigments in Cotman’s watercolors are Lemon Yellow Hue, Ultramarine Blue and Permanent Rose Red. If using a six-color mixed system, we recommend Lemon Yellow Hue, Light Cadmium Yellow Hue, Ultramarine Blue, Dark Blue, Permanent Rose Red and Cadmium Red Hue.
